Carlow College, St. Patrick

Established prior to the French Revolution, Carlow College, St. Patrick's, is the oldest Catholic university in Ireland. Bishop James O'Keeffe of Kildare and Leighlin (1752–1787) took advantage of the progressive liberalization of the Penal Laws brought about by Gardner's Relief Act (1782) to create a higher education institution in Carlow. Founded in 1782, Carlow College opened for enrollment on October 1, 1793. Carlow College served as a seminary and a lay college of the humanities from 1793 to 1892. Over the years, generations of politicians, clergy, authors, and public servants who were leaders in their own societies have received their education from Carlow. Currently, Carlow College, St. Patrick's, is a four-year liberal arts institution that is semi-private and situated in the county town of Carlow, Ireland. The town has a vibrant population of about 25,000 people.

New lecture halls have been developed as part of Carlow College's recent building and restoration program. Additionally, the P.J. Brophy Library, the Kathleen Brennan Students Center, and the Delaney Archive have been completed (2006). The College gave property to the Carlow Local Authority for the construction of the George Bernard Shaw Theatre (VISUAL) and the Center for Contemporary Art, a €18 million development project in the center of Carlow Town, as part of its ongoing support for the arts. Lennon House was renovated by Carlow College in 2011 to offer on-campus housing. In order to accommodate future growth, the College finished purchasing a property that was adjacent to its campus in 2015.
